Crack The Code. get there before anyone else.

One secret code, and the whole room guessing at once. Every guess is graded privately, on the guesser's own phone, and the first person to crack it wins outright.

Mastermind, minus the shared board. Nobody can lean over and read your deductions, so your phone is the only place your progress ever shows. Play it around one table or with a room scattered across the country.

What actually happens

The quietest, most intense game in the library.

The room goes quiet. Everyone is on their own phone, working their own trail, because nobody's board looks like anyone else's. First guess goes in: 1234. The feedback lands back on that one screen only: one right, two in the wrong place.

Across the room, ten other phones are running ten different trails. Someone tries 4321. Someone else tries 5678. There is nothing to lean over and copy, so everybody is actually thinking. Someone is scribbling on a napkin. Somebody else has quietly opened a spreadsheet.

By the seventh guess, one person leans back, smiles, and submits 8462. Four correct, none misplaced. The room only finds out when every screen changes at once: somebody cracked it, and the game is over.

The rules

How Crack The Code actually plays.

How to play

  1. 1

The host locks in one secret code at the start, either a random one or their own

  2. 2

Everyone guesses the whole code on their own device, all at the same time

  3. 3

On Easy, every guess comes back graded digit by digit: green means right digit in the right place, amber means right digit in the wrong place, grey means it is not in the code

  4. 4

On Hard you're only told how many digits landed; figuring out which one is up to you

  5. 5

Your own guesses build up into a board on your phone, so each round rules more out

  6. 6

Nobody sees anybody else's guesses, so the deduction is yours alone

  7. 7

The code never changes, so keep deducing until someone gets it

How to win

Be the first to submit the exact code. There is no points race: one player cracks it and the game is over on the spot.

What makes it work

  • Digit-by-digit feedback

Easy mode colour-codes every digit, not just a tally

  • Two feedback modes

Easy shows you which digits landed, Hard only tells you how many

  • Private deduction

Everyone works from their own guesses, nobody sees anyone else's

  • Winner takes it instantly

No leaderboard grind, cracking the code ends the game

While you host

You run it. Everything else keeps itself.

Once Crack The Code is running, the grading, the deduction, and the finish are handled. You get to be in the room instead of behind a spreadsheet.

Final podium

You wins

You

1

1

One code, one winner. That's the whole game.

This is how it ends, on whatever screen you are casting to.
  • Nobody downloads anything

A code goes on your screen. People point a camera at it, type a name, and they are in. No app, no accounts, no one asking what the wifi password is.

  • It ends the moment it's cracked

No leaderboard to build, no rounds to bank. The instant the exact code lands, the game is over and the room finds out together.

  • It ends on a podium

Top three on the big screen at the end, and every player gets their own result card on their phone that they can save or send to the group chat.

Where Crack The Code shines

Same game, your room.

Set the code length, the time per round, and how much a guess gives away, then run it and let the room go quiet.

Engineering team

The competition for the team that loves a puzzle.

A senior engineering manager runs it as the energiser at a quarterly offsite, in a room full of people who solve constraint problems for a living. Every phone is working its own trail, dead silent, completely focused. Whoever cracks it sets the afternoon's agenda. Everyone else demands a rematch.

Family games night

Three generations, one puzzle, total focus.

Christmas evening, three generations, everyone on their own phone. The youngest cousin is faster than anybody expected. The grandfather is making probability arguments out loud to nobody in particular. The cousin cracks it. The grandfather requests a rematch and gets one, with a new code.

Pub quiz

The round your quiz night has never had.

A pub quiz host needs something that is not trivia. Crack the Code goes up as its own round and every table works it privately from their phones. First table to crack it wins a round of drinks. Word gets around and the next quiz is busier.

  • Pub and restaurant quiz nights

Slot it in as the puzzle round between the music and the picture round. Every table guesses from their own phones and it needs no printing.

  • Engineering and analyst teams

The one game where the quiet person in the corner wins on their own deduction. One code is enough for a lunchtime.

  • Classroom logic lesson

Deduction, elimination, and testing a hypothesis, wrapped in something a class will actually fight over.

  • Remote team energiser

Short, silent, and completely fair over a video call. No accents to mishear and no crosstalk, since everyone is heads-down on their own phone.

How Crack the Code plays

Everyone guesses for themselves.

There are no teams to coordinate here. Every player works their own board and their own deductions, even in a session that has teams for its other rounds.

Everyone on their own phone

One code, and the whole room is in.

People point their camera at the code on your screen, type a name, and they are playing. Nothing to download, nothing to sign up for, and it works the same whether they are in the room with you or dialled in from three time zones away.

Best for: virtual sessions, hybrid offsites, and any crowd big enough that you want everyone answering at once.

Always individual

No team huddle, on purpose.

Even if the rest of your session is split into teams, Crack the Code keeps every player guessing on their own. There is nothing to pool: a shared answer would just be one person's deduction wearing the team's name.

Best for: sessions that want one round where nobody can hide behind a teammate's answer.

Offline · Coming soon

Online only, for now.

Crack the Code is built around every guess being graded privately, on the guesser's own phone, so for now everyone needs a device. A shared-screen version would have to show everyone's grading on the same screen, which defeats the point of the game.

There is a code on the screen. Who cracks it first?

Free to start. Logic-heavy, entirely private, and more addictive than it has any right to be.
